AIRCRAFTMAN FINED
SCUFFLES WITH POLICEMAN EXPRESSION OF REGRET (0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. "You have brought disgrace on your uniform; such conduct cannot be tolerated," said Mr. J. T. B. Taaffe, J.P., to Leading Aircraftman Frances Morton Bremner, who admitted in the Kaitaia Police Court charges of assaulting a policeman and possessing liquor near a dance hall. Constable Malloy gave evidence that at mignight on May 22 at a dance at .wanui he found the accused with a quart of beer. The accused refused to give his name or any particulars. When witness took him to the police car and tried to put him in the front seat, he resisted and made a sudden dive aimed at tipping the constable into a deep roadside drain. This carried both in with the constable on top. A scuffle ensued until Bremner indicated that he had had enough. Upon his release, nowever, he attacked the After a short scuffle h'e was arrested, and spent what was left of the night in gaol. Asked by the Bench for an explanation. Bremner said the constable's evidence was frank and fair. He was very sorry about the whole affair, and would see it did not happen again. The whole thing was due to his own pigheadedness after drinking. "Had it not been for your explanation and your regret, a."term of imprisonment would have been the punishment," Bremner was informed. Accused was convicted and fined £10 and costs for assault, and £5 for being in possession of liquor near a dance.
