PROTECTION SOCIETY AN ACTIVE YEAR PUBLIC HELP ASKED An appeal for a greater measure of financial support was made in the forty-eighth annual report of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children which will be presented at the annual meeting this evening. "Although the society has assets totalling £3755 in debentures, mortgages and cash, the report continues, the revenue account shows an excess of expenditure over income of £359 19/ for the past year. This is due partly to the loss of a street collection, to a decrease in the Government grant, and also in the subscriptions, which were only £248. A glance at the figures showing over £7780 per annum secured for dependent persons by our efforts surely indicates the community value of the work being done and supports the claim for better financial help from the public. "At the invitation of the Wellington branch of the society a conference of the society was held in that city in July last and proved stimulating and helpful in co-ordinating the efforts of the various branches. Remits on matters of importance to the welfare of women and children were discussed, and at the conclusion a deputation waited upon Cabinet Ministers to request action. An increase in the allowances to soldiers' dependents was asked for, and has since been granted.
"Special thanks are extended to the Happiness Club for its gift of £85 used for baby clothes for needy cases, and for their Christmas gift of £18 15/6 for the children."
The report also states that sympathetic and understanding advice and help is rendered to those who seek the society's aid, the aim being the restoration of personal independence and confidence to those who for various reasons find themselves unable to cope with their problems. Cases handled this year totalled 1208 and involved 5703 office interviews.
