RADICAL CHANGES

MR. PHELAN'S WARNING CUTTING ROAD SERVICES A warning that radical changes are imminent in the field of road transport—with a curtailment of passenger and goods transport services—has been given bv the No. 1 Licensing Authority. Mr. E. J. Phelan. Conservation of supplies of rubber tyres is the reason for the measures to be taken. Mr. Phelan, who has returned to the city after attending a conference of transport authorities and interests, states that a review of all existing licenses will be made as soon as possible to eliminate wasteful services. The tyre position, was undoubtedly serious, and everybody concerned would be expected to make sacrifices. The review would cover all passenger bus, service car and goods transport services. "Various committees have been set up to formulate plans whereby savings can be effected," said Mr. Phelan. "In each licensing district advisory committees will "be established and will give effect to the recommendations adopted. The operators affected by the review of licenses will have the right of appeal to the licensing authority and its decision will be final."
