RECORD OAT CROPS
SOUTHLAND'S HIGH YIELDS
(0.C.) INVERCARGILL, this day. Oats crops in Southland this season have been remarkably heavy and yields of from 120 to 150 bushels nave not been uncommon. These figures are more than double the Southland average last season and almost three times the Dominion average.
These phenomenal yields have not been confined to any particular disj.u.n Southland. Brokers state that the production of oats this season has been so heavy that the market value would probably fall substantially below 3/6 a bushel but for the fixed price. favourable growing season with a heavier rainfall in the summer than usual contributed to the high yields of the crops. Many crops in all parts of Southland stood up to six feet high in the fields Another contributing factor towards tne success of oats growers this season was the greater use of the V o ri ?&' which was introduced to Southland several seasons ago. It is considered by some growers that the Onward varietv will produce 20 bushels to the acre more tnan the previous most popular strains of oats.
