AGE LIMIT
WATERSIDE WORKERS
RANKS STILL UNFILLED
That the maximum age at which applicants could qualify for admission to the Auckland Watersiders* Union had been fixed at 45 was the subject of surprised comment at the Auckland Area Manpower Committee last night, when appeals were heard on behalf of nine waterside workers.
It was stated that as the result of recent advertisements for additional members for the union over 300 had been received, but 60 per cent were either over age or otherwise considered unsuitable. It was believed that even when all applicants had been considered there would still be a serious shortage.
It was stated that the age limit mentioned had been laid down by the Waterfront Control Commissioner in Wellington. Mr. L. N. Harris, Crown representative with the Manpower Committee, suggested that this age limit had the effect of closing the door of the union with one hand while opening it with the other.
Decisions were reserved in all nine cases.
