GOOD SHEPHERD.

PROGRESS OF ORDER. MAORIS IN THE NORTH. "One of the biggest contributions which could be made to the diocese of Auckland would be the establishment of a branch nouse in the north, where the Maoris could be given a definite religious influence," said Bishop Simkin yesterday afternoon, when presiding at the annual meeting of the Order of the Good Shepherd, held in the Mission House. "The condition of the Maoris in the north of the diocese is deplorable," he continued. "I was appalled by the drunkenness among the young Maori men and girls. The sooner we wake up and realise their condition, and how few of them are receiving any religious training, the better. The Maori is an attractive personality, and we must do everything in our power to uplift him."

The Bishop said that the diocese of Auckland would be much poorer if the Order of the Good Shepherd did not exist, and he would like to see the number of sisters attached to the order extended. The chaplain of the order, Canon W. E. Lusk, in speaking to the report, stressed the power of spiritual fellowship and appealed for more associate members. He gave a brief outline of the work,, mentioning the importance of the visits paid by the sisters to the hospital, the infirmary, the mental hospital and the gaol. The creche had grown during the past year, 25 children at present being cared for while their mothers were away at work. The following officer.-, were elected: — Warden, Bishop Simkin, chaplain, Canon W. E. Lusk; superior, Mother Margaret; honorary auditor, Mr. G. B. Osmond; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. J.
