NEW CALEDONIA.
CONDITIONS NOW QUIET.
All is quiet at Noumea, capital of New Caledonia, according to passengers who reached Auckland yesterday afternoon by the Honolulu Clipper. The people now appeared to be satisfied, following the appointment of a Governor who was a supporter of Free France. The French sloop that had been at Noumea had now left and it was believed that some of the supporters of the Vichy Government had also taken their departure from the island. Concerning the suggestion that Japan was likely to obtain the bulk of the island's nickel trade, passengers considered that it was more likely that America would be the major purchaser of the valuable ore.
