SUBSIDY GRANTED.
■ e PASSENGER SERVICE. GREAT BARRIER ISLAND. Following an appeal made by the Great Barrier County Council for assistance, Cabinet has approved of a grant of £1000, inclusive of the present subsidy of £300, to enable the passenger steamer service between Auckland and Great Barrier Island to be resumed. For nearly 50 years the Northern Steamship Company had provided a weekly passenger service-'to the island, but in April last, because of heavy loss in keeping the service going, the passenger service was replaced by a weekly cargo and mail service. The residents of the island were greatly concerned at the change, and through Mr. J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, appealed to the Government for assistance. That assistance has now been supplied in the grant of £1000, and the Northern Company has decided to recommis*1 r on th <2 twin screw steamer Wairua, of 302 tons. The passenger service is expected, to resume early in December.
