A BUTCHER'S DEATH.
CLAIM BY WIDOW.
Arising out of her husband's sudden collapse and death when forking at his trade as a butcher in a Jervois Road shop in February last, Mrs. Evelyn Blanche Barber (Mr. Haigli) claimed in the Compensation Court before Mr. Justice O'Regan yesterday against Bridges, Overington and Company (Mr. West) for £1000 compensation and £29 5/ti funeral expenses on the ground that death resulted from prolonged exertion suffered in the course of the man's employment. After evidence had been given by claimant of her husband's complaint of heart pains immediately prior to the day of his death, and a fellow-employee of deceased had stated the circumstances of death, including the amount of hard work and strain entailed in the work, expert evidence was given by medical witnesses called for both sides. It was contended for claimant that death was due to heart failure induced by the strain of extra work, and for defendants that there was no evidence that death was due to heart failure. His Honor reserved his decision.
