STUDENTS UNHAPPY
LABOUR DAY EXAMS.
PETITION PREPARED.
| "The Government should do something about it." "Everyone else benefits; why pick on us?" These remarks were made to-day by •students of the Auckland University College concerning t>he date of commencement of degree examinations— October 28, Labour Day. The position was explained by an authority at the University College this morning. In the past, degree examinations had always commenced on November 1, which might fall on any day of the week. Recently, however, the Senate of the University of New Zealand decided, for the sake of con-
tinuity, to commence their degree examinations on the 44 th Monday of each year. This year the 44th Monday falls on Labour Day. That was all there was to it. But the students are unhappy. They are so unhappy that they have formed a petition and have already an imposing array of signatures. Part-time students claim that they are suffering most. A free day just prior to the examinations would mean a lot to a candidate who works during the day and studies at night, it was stated. Students this morning made the following observations:— Labour Day is a statutory holiday and a Labour Government is in power. Surely the Government could not stand by and watch such a miscarriage of justice. Revenge for the "umbrella stunt." It might mean the difference between success and failure to part-time students. A coffee evening *5 being held that night. Who is going to turn up if the beastly exams are on? Labour Day, in 1968, will again be the 44th Monday in the year. Students declare that something will hwe to be done to avert a double tragedy.
