IN THE CITY.

In a recent issue Mr. Xoton took exception to Mr. J. J. L. Logan's reported statement that he had never seen so much drunkenness ae in Xew Zealand. Air. Xoton may or may not be ae far travelled as Mr. Logan, but it is evident that he has not visited our city streets on Saturday afternoons for some time. Recently I had occasion to visit the city on a Saturday afternoon about 5 pjn. and the footpaths in the lower part of the city were in such a shocking condition that one had to be very careful where one walked. If there was not much' drunkenness in the city, there was certainly very much indisposition, making one wonder just how far we had progressed in civilisation. E.W.B.
