MAIN HIGHWAYS.
ROAD CONSTRUCTION. EASING THE PROGRAMME. While considerable road reconstruct tion work is being carried out under the policy of the Public Works Department, there is some evidence that the operations have been eased. The reconstruction and sealing programme on the section of four and a half miles of the AucklandHelensville highway has been suspended for the time being, and it is unlikely that this portion of the road will be paved in the approaching summer as was originally intended.
In the Auckland Public Works district reconstruction and paving work appears to be confined to contracts let where the work ie being supervised by the county councils. Included in these are the reconstruction and sealing of about six miles of the PukekoheWaiuku highway, also a section of the highway passing the Kingseat Hospital on the Papakura-Titi section. Work is well in hand on the portion from Tuakau to the Waikato River. Further south work is proceeding on the main highway for six op seven miles between Te Awamutu and Cambridge.
Good progress has been made on the construction of the new traffic bridge just outside Helemsvillc. The bridge has been practically completed and it is expected the approaches to the bridge will be open in about two months' time.
