GAOL FOR DRIVER.

CRASH INTO BRIDGE. INTOXICATION CHARGE. WHANGAREI, this day. Charles William Swanberg, aged 04, retired baker, of Whangarei, pleaded guilty iii the Whangarei Court this morning to a charge of being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor vehicle. Defendant's truck was first driven on one side of the road, then on the other and then in the centre, said Senior-Ser-geant A. Henderson. As it approached a bridge in Whangarei it tailed to take the turn to the right and collided with the left hand side of the bridge, pushing it outward and breaking a water pipe. Swanberg was In a very intoxicated condition, and could have been arrested for ordinary drunkenness. He was examined by a doctor who certified that he was definitely under the influence of liquor and incapable of driving a car. Swanberg was a war pensioner and suffered from certain disabilities.

The magistrate, Mr. R. Ferner, sentenced Swanberg to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour. Defendant's license was cancelled for twelve months.
