ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The seventh annual convention of the Young People's Christian Temperance Union was held on Saturday in the Newton East Mission Hall, Dundonald Street. Mr. Jim Smith, district president, was in the chair and welcomed delegates and members. Miss E. Appleby, district Y superintendent, led devotions, speaking on the conference keynote, "Arise and build." Greetings were received from Mrs. Hugh Kasper, J.P., now on her way home from Sydney, and Miss L. M. Read, district treasurer of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. A year of steady service was reported by the secretary, Miss E. Hellaby, while the treasurer's report showed a credit balance. Mr. Jim Smith, in his presidential address, stressed the need to build up enthusiasm in their cause, to build up public opinion on behalf of the cause, and to build up eonhde ice in themselves and in their cause. A silver vase donated by Mrs. Hugh Kasper and competed for by the Auckland branches was won by Auckland Central for the highest record of service. A scientific temperance address was given by Miss Joyce Webber on the "Nature of Alcohol." The election of officers resulted as follows: District Y superintendent, Miss E. Appleby; president, Mr. Jim Smith (Auckland Central); vice-president, Mr. Laurie Thomas (Avondale); correspondence secretary, Mr. Keith Bartlett; records secretary, Miss Joyce Webber; treasurer, Mr. A. Turley.
