NATIVE FLOWERS.
SPLENDID EXHIBITS. CHEESEMAN MEMORIAL. Colour—and still more colour—is the kevnote of the ninth (hceseiuau memorial exhibition of native spring flowers, which was opened at the Auckland War Memorial Miiseimuthis afternoon. New Xealandei's have dropped into the habit of thinking of their nat'ne flowers as lieinu a somewhat drab variety, but tho-e who vi-itcil the exhibition to-day mu.-t have come away with new views on the subject.
The variety in colour ill tlie exhibits is equalled only by the number of different localities from which they have been sent. Of the .'ioo entries ' from schoolchildren souk- have come from as far south as Stewart [-land, while their exhibits ratine from mossy ferns from the swampland to hardy t-pecitnens from Kuapelnt. Of e.-|>eeial interest is a colled ion of paintings ~f native flowers by Mrs. A. T. Ryeeroft. while attention is aUo beinjr. attracted by a larjje exhibit arranged bv the Citv Council.
As in previous year-, the exhibition was largely arranged bv Miss l.iley Cranwell. who had assistance from Mrs. B. Huddle and Mii-s ]{. Molesworth. The show, which will lie remaining open this eveninp, will continue until Wednesday. Results in the children's section, which was judged this morning, are as follow: — Class I.—Primary schools: Clevcdon 1. Hoheria 2. Highly commended: St. Ann's. Special prize (Mrs. Mappin): Warkworth. Class ll.—Secondary schools: Helensville District High School 1, Auckland Girls' Grammar 2. Highly commended. Epsom Girls' Grammar. Class lll.—Junior posy: Pelita Sharp (St. Ann's) 1. Gladwyn McPherson iClevedon) 2. Highly commended: Florence Tevrsley (Remuera). Special prize (Mrs. Mappin): Isabel Smith (Clevedon). Class IV.—Senior posy: Margery Woodhead 1. Audrey de Berry 2. Highly commended: Miss Sergeant (Epsom Girls' Grammar). Class V.—Shoulder spray: Glen Nicholson (Epsom Girls Grammar) 1. D. Home (Warkworth) 2 O Phillips (Warkworth) 3. Special prize (Mrs. Mappin): P. Speer (St. Cuthbert's). C la * s VI.-—Spring flowers: D. Armstrong (Meadowbank) 1, G. Wedding (Royal Oak) 2 Highly commended. E. Ingham (Meadowbank). Class Vll.—Painting (junior): Beverley Rowell (Kowhai) 1, Pat Williams (Kowhai) 2. Highly commended. Dulcie Sutherland (Kowhai).
