MANUKAU'S "DOUBLE."

SUBURBAN CRICKET REPORT. ' * COMING SEASON'S PROBLEMS. Manukau Club's winning of the senior A and senior B competitions, an achievement rather unique in the history of the Auc-klanrl City and Suburban Cricket Association, is referred to in the 26tli report of til at body to be .presented at the annual meeting on Monday evening.

The 1939-40 season, says the report, opened in an atmosphere of uncertainty on account of the war. but fortunately, in common with .other sport organisations, the association was able to carry on with success in spite of one of the ft-ettest seasons for years. However, towards the find, some of the lower grades were affected through teams losing personnel. It was suggested that players from disbsnded clubs should link ap with other clubs in the association. Christinas Tourist? As in former Vears. keen and bright play was enjoyed bv large attendances at the Domain cricket ground, where interest was sustained until che final matches, with Manuk*u claiming double honours. R V. headed the second grade, and Woolworths won the third grade championship. The association representatives participated in the Auckland provincial Christmas tournament, held at Hamilton. The team, Walkato. Poverty Bay and Auckland B. performed quite v, jll on difficult wickets, and the experience was regarded as beneficial to a number of young players. At the usual meeting of team managers it h*d been rfecided. subject to favourable conditions, to hold this season's tournament at the Auckland Domain, but It appeared at present doubtful whether such * tournament would be arranged next Christmas. Three Century-Makers. Among some fine batting during the season, centuries were scorcd by R. Longville (Brixton). F. Wood (Brixlon), and T. Webster (R.V.). while In other grades five players reached three figures and received batting gloves, a recognition thst was found to be greatly appreciated by young plavers. Wickets on various playing areas had shown improvement, and the Domain g roundsman. Mr. I. Reid. hnd been commended. The Umpires Association had agiin done splendid work, but required new members which could be supplied by clubs persuading ex-members and sup-1 porters Tto give such sporting assistance to the game. Now an incorporated body, the association nsd jiad its rules rpproved by the Registrar and printed in book form. Healthy Flnanres. After meeting all commitments for the season, the association had a credit br lance of £113 17/7 this notwithstanding a reduced income owing to the loss of wicket fees through the cancellation of matches owing to wet weather. As some further reduction could be anticipated in the coming season, due to war conditions, funds would have to be carefully conserved. Mr F Blackie's gold watch for outstanding fieldsman in Senior A grade went to R. Longville. and medals, the gift of Mr. J. Campbell, to members of the second grade winners, had gone to the R.V. team. Other donors to the association were vice-presidents. Messrs. J- W. Proud. H. J. KelHher. R. G. Hook and A. J. Gaily. In addition to its usual donations, the associati»n gave £15 15/ to the Sick and "Wounded Soldiers Fund, and several presentations had been made to men who had given long and outstanding service. j Call To Veterans. Thanking all officials, players and supporters. | the report stated that the management understood i the problems to be faced in the approaching season as the result of war demands, and, with the co-operation of all members and enthusiastic supporters. would endeavour to continue to maintain facilities for this enjoyable summer sport. Schemes to assist clubs with teams depleted by military calls will include suggestions for explayers to emerge from retirement.
