FOR FAR EAST?
FRENCH WARSHIPS. Franco-British Agreement To Preserve Status Quo. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Reed. 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19. It is strongly reported in American, British and French quarters in Shanghai that the three French cruisers and three destroyers which recently passed Gibraltar are en route to Indo-China. This, it is stated, is in accordance with a reported agreement between Britain and France to maintain Indo-China'e statue quo. A Tokyo message says Chinese have seized control of a section of the Frenchowned Yunnan railway, in Chinese territory. It was reported earlier from Shanghai that the Japanese civilian evacuation of Indo-China continues. So far few Chinese have left. Members of the Japanese mission which has been negotiating with the Indo-China authorities expressed the fear that the French Army will refuse to permit the Japanose Army to pass through the territory, as agreed. Members of the mission have their suitcases packed in the event of a sudden departure becoming necessary.
