NOT TO RETIRE. PARISIENNE WILL CONTEST N.Z. CUP. Pamieune is not to be retired from racing after all. She is back to her beat form after a long spell, and will be prepared for the New Zealand Trotting Cup and other important races to be decided at the November carnival of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. Sis months ago, Parisienne's trainer, R. B. Berry, announced that, as it was difficult for the mare to win from the mark she was on and with so many young and improving horses on hand, he thought she might be retired. Another factor that probably influenced her connections not to race her again was the number of horses she had to contend with, even in suitable classes. An impression was also current that the outstanding characteristics that had enabled Parisienne to dominate the best in the land had become dimmed with arduous racing. Since then no fewer than seven high-class pacers have ibeen retired or sold ~to go to Australia, and Parisienne has' been let up Is on her handicap. Last year she raced off 422 for two miles; this season she will begin from 4.23. Only a young mare, seven years old, her return to the racing track will be welcomed. Bad Start in Life. Parieienne had a bad start in life. Her dam died when the foal wae ten days old, and ehe had to be raised by hand. - The well-known Takanini trainer. Hector Gray, broke her in and educated her. When two years old she was sent to Christchurch to join Berry's stable. During the journey she injured one of her hips, and this hampered her for nearly three years. It affected her most in getting away from the barrier, but continuous treatment effected a cure.

Parieienne opened her account by defeating ifoo. best of Tier age in the New Zea. land Sapling Stakes. Aβ a three-year-old she won the New Zealand Derbr Stakes, Summer Handicap and the Great Northern Derby. During the 1937-38 season - she won the Queen Mary Handicap, the Heafchcote Handicap, the Lyttelton Handicap, the Mason Stakes. Metropolitan Handicap, first heat of

the first qualifying event of the inteDominion Championship, third heat in the second qualifying event, the first heat in the third qualifying event and vu second to Pot Luck in the Grand Final; She gained most points, and was awarded the championship. In that year she won eight races, was three times second and twice third, and earned £3340 in stakes. In the next season she won the Boxing Day Handicap at Ashburbon, the Selwyn Handicap and the Metropolitan Handicap at Dunedin, thus contributing £1350 to her stake money. As a five-year-old she had a record possessed by few pacers for in three yeare* racing she had 'secured 15 firsts. 10 seconds and four thirds and £6116 in prize money Parisienne wae bred by Mr. G. McMillan! of Auckland, but was purchased as a foal by Mrs. D. R. Revell, for whom she has done all her racing.
