ALABAMA KID MEETS AUSTRALIAN BOXER BRANDER ON MONDAY
Les Brander, prominent Australian light-heavy-weight, meets a difficult opponent on Monday night at the Town Hall, when he meets the Alabama Kid, in a light-heavy-weight contest of twelve three-minute rounds. .The powerful negro has become quite a familiar sight around Auckland since he arrived here with Johnny Hutchinson over a month ago. and those who have seen him In gym. workouts describe him as a fast and spectacular puncher. Amongst others who should know is the little Filipino lightweight Young Cildo. who considers the Kid- to be one of the finest light-heavies that he has ever seen in action. The American had an excellent record in Australia, where be won 26 out of 28 contests, beating amongst others Max Rayner, Atlio Sabatino end Jimmy Starr, present Victorian title-holder. In a bout with Don Richards he was defeated, but by no means disgraced, and the only other fighter to beat him was Gus Lesnevich. who holds world rating in the light-heavy-weight division. It has been no »asy matter to secure an opponent for a fighter of the Kid's calibre, but in Les Brander the local association feel convinced that they have one who will be able to hold his own and keep things moving. No less a Judge than Archie Moore, who frequently sparred with Brander in Australia, speaks highly of the letter's capabilities, and Brander also holds decisions over Rayner and Starr.
