HEART TO HEART APPEAL
Help Londoners In Their Deep Distress! Fund Totals £11,954 On Fourth Day Of Appeal While the long-drawn agony of London continues, under systematic raids of death-dealing German bombers, it is unnecessary to dwell in this column upon the sufferings of our kith and kin at the heart and centre of the British Commonwealth of Nations. We read that the London streets have become death-traps, as shrapnel showers down, and then* sands seek the protection of deep shelters and the underground railways. To-day's cable page, with its vivid story of heroic endurance, evokes the deepest sympathy for all Londoners. No one in the peace and security of New Zealand should so indulge himself as to stifle this emotion of sympathy. It is a duty, aside from any consideration of practical charity, to translate that emotion into action—the simple action of making an immediate donation to the fund opened by the "Auckland Star" for the relief of distress in London. So widespread is the appreciation of what our London kinsfolk are suffering by day and by night, under the most pitiless and persistent attack ever launched against million- of civilians in a congested city, that the "Heart to Heart Appeal" for funds to help all in distress requires no stressing. This column is but an urgent reminder of e need that cries to every British heart. The need for help—end help can only mean clothing, food, warmth and protection from the elements—is immediate. Those for whom the appeal is made ere homeless, many of them grievously wounded, perhaps burned. Relatives and friends, fathers end mothers, little children, have looked their last upon the sun. Families have been sundered, death having blotted loved ones from the book of life. And for the living, the terror continues. Daily the toll of the bombers mounts. It is a toll of human anguish, of peril and hardship by day, of fortitude and pain nobly endured in the lengthening autumn nights. Discomfort is the least of what has to be borne. The "Heart to Heart Appeal" is for money to provide the stark necessities for the sustenance of life. Realising this, all will give at ones, as generously as personal means will allow. Send your donation to the "Auckland Star" Fund to-day! "They Are Fighting Our Fight.'' The eppeel made by the "Auckland Star" was misnheoeolj endorsed by the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday, when on the mptina of the chairman. Mr. H. Luke, it was decided to donate a sum of £1000, subject to contribution being validated by legislation. Mr. Luke said the time was opportune for the board to do snmslhias for the people of London who had had to eerier such hardships of late in the defence of their homes. They had to stand the bombing day efter day and night after night. He made reference to the removal ef the ties* bomb from St. Paul's. The men who had carried out the job were heroes. Voices: They should get the Victoria Cress! The motion was seconded by Mr. E. V. Sutherland. •11 r " h P ne ' an •**d it was an occasion when contributions were willingly made to relieve the suffering of the people. Whatever was tent would be appreciated. "We are comfortable here in New Zealand, but over the sea they are fighting our fight." he said. "They are still being bombed and are still keeping the flag flying." he added. When the motion to contribute £1000 was unanimously approved, Mr. Luke said it was a privilege to be associated with men who so readily responded to an appeal of this kind.
