ROYEVRUS WINS.
AVONDALE RACES. SURPRISE BY CAMBRIA GLEN CONNELL AT LAST. HURDLES TO SMAIX BOT. In showery weather the Avondale Jockey Club's Spring meeting was brought to a close thie afternoon. As a result of rain yesterday afternoon and throughout last night the track was on the dead s!de. The attendance was, large.
Taking charge a quarter of a mile from home, Small Boy, the top-weight in the Grey Lynn Hurdles, went away over the concluding stages to win with a good deal in hand by two lengths and a half. The Trimmer wae the early leader from Black Musk, Small Boy, Lapidarian, Hessketoon, and King Musk, but Black Muek forged to the front to lead along the back stretch from Hessketoon, Lapidarian, Small Boy and King Musk. Hessketoon and Small Boy joined Black Musk crossing the top and Small Boy then drew to the front to go on and win without being further troubled. Tliere was a good go for second place between King .Musk and Knight of Australia, both of whom finished on well, while Haocwhip was cloee up fourth, and Hessketoon next. An Overdue Win. Glen Connell ran his best race to date when he won the Maiden Plate. On Saturday he made a fair showing for most of the way in the Trial Plate, for which he was second favourite. To-day he was allowed to go out at a very nice price. He quickly hit the front, and was never afterwards headed. Venture ran another good race to get second, while Foxola, who wae third, ie a likely improver. Air Port lost hie rider at the start, and there was some delay before he wae caught and brought back to the barrier. Venture, Rajanya, Glen Connell and Foxola were the first to show out, and when they settled down Glen Connell was in charge from Venture, Foxola, Tea Bloseom and Rajanya. Tea Blossom ran up to Glen Connell crossing the top, the pair being attended by Venture, Foxola, Village Green and
Rajanya. Glen Connell was first into the straight from Foxola, Venture, Village Green, Air Port and Pleuron. Nothing had a show with Glen Connell, who went on to win by two lengths from Venture, with Foxola three.-quarters of a length away third. Air Port was fourth, followed by Pleuron, Lady Pay, Mia Rβgina, Kaalooa, Marinoto and Rajanya. A Surprise. Cambria, a full-brother to Venilam and Bronweii, who was making hie first appearance, led all the way in the Nursery Handicap. He jumped away smartly and though Panoni challenged him over the last furlong he held on to win by a head. Panoni did not go away too well on Saturday, and she wae much quicker off the mark to-day. Funny Fox was always prominent and will improve. Cambria was followed early by Declaim, Silver Clarion, Panoni and Funny Fox. Cambria was dear of Panoni, who wae followed into the straight by Declaim, Funny Fox, Silver Clarion, and Route March. Half-way down Panoni came through on the rails, but failed to- reach Cambria by a head. Funny Fox was a length away third, followed by Minko, Bright Lady, Declaim, and Route March. Royevnu Scores. The etableinates, Royevrue and Our Jean, finished in that order in the Plumpton Handicap, the chief handicap event of the day. Royevrus began, smartly, and' was never further away than fifth, while Our Jean came from a long way back to run him to half a length. Better placed early in the race, the latter may have troubled Royevrus much more. Sly Fox, who finished fourth in the Cup, ran to the front about five furlongs from home, and he was still clear with a furlong to go, but then weakened and had to be content with third place. Flood Tide ran his best race for some time, while Flying Acre showed up better than any of the others. Passing the stand, Royevrus was in charge from Flood Tide, Flying Acre, Gamos, Sly Fox, Valamito, Eastern Heir, Coronation, Kena and Our Jean. By the time the top was reached Sly Fox and Flying Acre were together in front, with Flood Tide, Royevrus, Gamos, Eastern Heir and Coronation. Sly Fox was well clear of Flying Acre at the home turn, the pair being followed bv Gamos, Flood Tide and Royevrus. A*t the distance Royevrus went to the lead, and stalling off Our Jean, who came with a great rattle, beat her by half a length. Sly Fox was a neck away third, followed by Flood Tide, Flying Acre, Kena, Eastern Heir, Kilcash and Gamos. Detailed results:— GEE* LYNN HUBDLES «f £2M.
