CITY ORPHANAGES.
GIFT OF £500 MADE. An anonymous gift of £500 has been made by an Auckland resident through Canon W. W. Averill, vicar of All Saints Anglican Church, Ponsonby, to the Auckland Orphanages Advisory Council, which is representative of twelve city orphanages, conducted by various denominations, and caring for about a thousand children. The council will make its annual appeal on September 27, and it is hoped to raise £10 a child, or approximately £10,000. In spite of higher costs, the council hopes to carry on the orphanage work without curtailment. In stressing how short the time is between childhood and when a boy or girl 'becomes a responsible citizen, the council has directed attention to the fact that the young men, who are in the front line of the navy, the army and the air force, were babiee in arms during the last war period. '"We have unanimously resolved to co-operate in every way possible with the Government in its efforts for the refugee children," states the secretary of the council, Mr. T. E. Whitton, in connection with the appeal. "It is surely the privilege of every citizen to see that every child is adequately nurtured and trained to take its proper place in life. We must not forget that the great young heroes in the forefront of our present fighting forces were mostly babes, in arms in the last war." In anticipation of the general effort, the council has already received a considerable sum in donations.
