THEFT OF SOCKS
EMPLOYEES FINED. "I would be failing in my duty if I did not indicate in the penalties that companies must be protected against this sort of thing. There is no excuse for what they did. One of the defendants, a child of 17, receives a wage of £3 10/ a week." With these remarks. Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, fined each of six youths and a girl £4 on charges of theft. All pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant Walsh said the defendants, whose ages ranged from 17 to 19 years, were employed at a factory which manufactured* socks. Jiach had stolen socks, some one pair and others more, the most being four pairs. All belonged to respectable families and were receiving good wages. The girl defendant liad since left her employment, but the firm was willing to take the others back.
