St. Andrew-by-tlie-Wardrobe, in the City of London, gets its quaint surname from its former proximity to the King's Great Wardrobe. This " was a town mansion of the Beauchamps. which was purchased bv Edward 111., and assigned to the keepers of the royal apparel, which was worn on high State occasions. William Romaine, the celebrated preacher, who was rector for many years, made St. Andrew-by-the-Wa»drobe the first city stronghold ty the Evangelical movement during the 18th 1 century. |
