SHORTER HIGHWAY.

AUCKLAND-WHANGAREI. WHANGAREI, this day. As from yesterday the main highway between Whangarei and Auckland is a third of a mile shorter. The Automobile Association advises that the Otaika deviation on the Whangarei side of the Portland turn-off is now open for traffic. The deviation cuts off an extensive flood area, the one point which caused serious inconvenience to travellers on the highway. The alignment followed by the new tetion of highway is a great improvement on the road previously in use, a fairly steep hill having -been replaced by a flat surfaca. The narrow one-way bridge spanning the Otaika Stream has been converted into a two-way concrete structure.
