NATIVE LAND.
PAYMENT OF RATES. LARGER QUOTA DESIRED. ROTORUA, this day. The opinion that now that most native land schemes in the Kotorua district were matured and producing well, a larger quota of settlers should pay county rates, was expressed at a meeting of the Rotorua County Council yesterday. This was embodied in a motion by the chairman, Mr. H. P. Ford. The clerk, Mr. A. Bellingham, «tated that of £1800 levied in rates on native lands in the district £400 had been collected last year. On six of the schemes £250 had been collected last year of the £333 levied in rates, and £281 in arrears. Some, scheme;, had paid almost in lull. "It puts a premium on success," stated Mr. Ford, who emphasised that it was unfair that some shuuH pay while others did not. "It does not make the Maoris rateconscious," added Mr. Copefand Smith. Until farms under the scheme provided sufficient to meet the capital outlay, there were no rates paid, stated Mr. Bellingham, but some of the farms were so heavily loaded that it was doubtful when they would pay any rates at all.-
