DAMAGED FREIGHTER.

REPAIRS TO ARMADALE. VALUE OF FLOATING DOCK. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Repairs to the British motor ship Armedale are proceeding satisfactorily, said Mr. C. M. Turrell, general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Limited, which ie the representative of the owners of the ship, the Australind Steam Shipping Company, London. The Armadale, a freighter of 5066 tone, was involved in a collision in Cook Strait on the night of July 31 with the Norwegian tanker Ole Jacob (8308 tons) and was damaged extensively. A big hole was ripped in the Armadale's hull near the bows. An inspection of the damage to the ship was made early last month on the floating dock, and she went on to the dock again on August 23. Mr. Turrell eteted to-day it was estimated the repairs would take about eight weeks from that date to complete. Repair work has been in hand since soon after the collision, for a great deal of the required material has been fabricated. The Armadale will not be in dock for the whole of the eight weeks the job is estimated to take. A good deal of the finishing work will be done with the ship afloat. The Ole Jacob, whose bows were badlv damaged, is being repaired at Auckland. The fact that big repair jobe such as that on the Armadale can be done at Wellington affords striking proof of the value of the floating dock to the port and the facilities available for shipping.
