New Women's Club.— Mr. L. Fawkner, J.P., secretary of the Council of Temperance Education, gave an address on the "Fallacy of State Control of the Liquor Trade." "No Government," said the speaker, "could be expected to purchase a business, and seek to destroy it by decreasing consumption." Inter alia, he expressed the opinion that it was impossible to obtain State by popular vote, especially against the two stronger issues of continuance and prohibition. The president, Mrs. W. B. Darlow, was in the chair. The hostesses were Mrs. A. E. Robinson and Mrs. Francis. * » * » Old Thames Girls.—The fourteenth birthday of the association was celebrated in the Lewis Eady Hall, there being many members present. Miss E. Caisley took the chair in the absence of the president. A cake bearing 14 candles was cut by Mr. E. Johns aged 90 years, and Mrs." E. Campbell aged = 8S years. Items were given by Mrs. C. Bassett and Miss B. Brown, Misses D. and H. Bagnall, Miss E. Payne, Miss L. Walker and Miss B. Brown; Miss E. Dunhan and Miss D. Bagnall, and Mr. G. Dalton. * * « * Classic Club. —The ninth meeting of the season was presided over by Dr. S. Kenneth Phillips. Members who contributed items were Miss Edna Peace, Mrs. Rena Edwards, Miss Ruth Hutehin. son, Miss Gwenda Weir, Mrs. Mavis Letcher, Miss June Taylor, Mr. Alfred Boyce and Mr. Henry Donaldson. The accompanists were Mrs. L. G. Grace. Miss Joan Dowding, Mr. A. Boyce and Dr. S. K. Phillips. * * * * National Council, Associate Branch.— The associate group of the National Council of Women met at the British Israel rooms. Mrs. M. M. Dreaver presided, and the minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary. Mrs. A. Warder.. An address <an "War Conditions ii* England" was given by Mrs. Arthur H. Turner. •* * « • Harmony Group. —At the monthly meeting a bright enterbainment was presented. Those taking part were: Misses P. Boyle, M. Lock, B. Edwards K. Barrabell, P. Curran. M. McKassack, A. Roe, D. Eddowes, M. Sommerville' Mr. D. Wrathall, G. Laird, B. Robson, L. Stephenson. The accompanists were Mrs. Boyle and Mr. A. Pow. * • * . Overseas League.— The weekly At Home was well attended, when Mr. Martin Smith, director of the W.E.A.. continued 'his series of talks on "The Vita! Importance of the Pacific to New Zealand." A great deal of interest was created by his principally dealin? with conditions in China. "Mrs. Gordon Nicholsen sang songs. * * * # Philistine Club.— At the recent social, Mr. T. R. Cbngalton was chairman. Items were given by Mesdames J. Manning, Gwen De Berg and Eva Simpson. Misses M. Rowe, W. Cook. B. Cahill, Messrs. Martin Liddle. C. Tucker and Wise. The accompanist was Mr. A. Boyce. * » • , Penwomen's Club.— An address on Charles Dickens was given by Mr. J. E. Green, who said that no other writer had surpassed him in popularity, either in England or in America. The president, Mrs. Helen Griffiths, presided.
