SHAW MAKES IT SAFE. HORTON NARROWLY MISSES A RECORD. FAVOUEITES FOR THE AMATEUR. {By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WANGANUI, this.day. On the final round Shaw started out with three fours, but the fourth cost him five. Another five went down to his account at the sixth, but he holed a chip for a four at "the seventh. Duncan and Douglas both returned a fine 73 for the final round, and had the first day been better the former would have been very hard to beat. Douglas was playing *f f golf through the green, but his putting wae continually letting him down. In the afternoon Sloan Morpeth was not tod reliable on the greens, but neverthe less he returned a fair card of 75. -\ow that he is back in his best form he is the favourite for the amateur. _ C. C. Both in the morning and the afternoon he was playing very steadily. J- A. Clements was also playing well, but was having trouble with his chip shots: • m M. GLENDOWIE CLUB.

In the final of the Olendowie Club's senior championship on Saturday, Allcott beat Hutchison, 8 and 7. Allcott was -to sparkling form,»and in the afternoon round shattered his own, course record by five strokes. He played splendid golf throughout and gave his opponent no chance. In the morniiiig round he equalled the course record of 75, and was five up on Hutchison. A feature of his play was his deadldy putting. A'llcott's display in the afternoon is considered the best ever seen on ; the Glendowie links. His driving was a Jot stronger -than in the morning, while his putting was every bit as. certain. On half-a-dozen greens he holed 18 to 20foot putts. He was round in 70, thus lowering his previous record for the course by-five strokes. In the final of a championship this is am achievement which ranks high in. Auckland golf. "Following is his card, bogey figures being in parentheses: —5 (4), 3 (3); 4 (4), 6 (4), 3 (5), 4 (4), 3 (3), 4 (4),'4■ (4), out 36; 2 (3), 4.(4), 2~ (3), 6 (o), 4 (5), 3 ,<4), 5 (4), 3 (4), 5 (4), in 34; total, 70. The card contains five bogeys, six "birdies" and one "eagle." Hutchison played much better in the afternoon, his round being 77, but the going was too strong. He was beaten 8 and 7. After the game Allcott was presented with the box of balls given by the .secretary, Mr. E. E. Nalder, for the player breaking the record.

The first round of the Auckland Club's senior championship was commenced at Middlemore on Saturday, and the second qualifying round of the junior championship was completed. " In the semi-finals of the championship. Mrs. H. Lloyd beat Mrs. 0. G. Bramwell. Mrs. C. H. Crump beat Mrs. S. ColmoreWilliams. In the final Mrs. H. Lloyd defeated Mrs. C. H. Crump.

TANEATUA CLUB,

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATAXE, this day. The Taneatua Golf Club's handicap competitions for prizes presented by the president and Mrs. T. E. Hamerton have been completed. The president's trophy was won by Miss Jean Moody and Mrs. Hamerton's trophy by G. C. Peebles. Weekly matches were played for silver buttons, players holding them the greatest number of times in the season to hold them outright. The ladies' prize was secured by Mrs. Merrie, and the men's by G. C. Peebles. The links are to be officially closed next Wednesday.

MOKORUA CLUB.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, this day. The official closing of the Mokorua Club was held during the week-end, the weather conditions being perfect. The mixed foursomes, over nine holes, resulted in a win for Mrs. Boon and C. H. C. S. Armstrong, with a fine gross score of 42. Prizes were presented by Mrs. F. J. Abbleby, the wife of the president, to the winners as follow :—Season's competitions : A grade championship, K. Knight; runnerup, F. Ryde. B grade: R. E. Burr, runnerup C. S. Armstrong. Ladies' A grade championship : Mrs. W. R. Sloane; runnerup, Mrs. E. Armstrong. B grade: Miss A. Tippett; runner-up, Miss L. Hooper. Men's driving competition : Sutcliffe. Ladies : Mrs Boon and Miss Chadwick. Men's approaching and putting competition: Dr. F. J. Appleby. Ladies : Mrs. Sloane. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. K. Knight for the use of his property for the links and general assistance to the club.
