THE CURTAIN RAISER.
The curtain raiser to the WellingtonAuckland challenge match between Diomede and Dunedin, was, for a time, tame for a Navy match, 'but ere the close it developed into a characteristically lively service 'bout. Dunedin established a comfortable lead of three goals early on, but Diomede came away strongly in the latter portion, failing, however, by one goal to draw level. The game was fast, with long swinging passes predominating, and on „ the general run of tihe play the teams were fairly evenly matched. The fact that such well known Soccer players as Reid, Gilmore, Miles, Milne, Rivers and Scott played ' for Diomede presaged their departure from these shores for England to-morrow, marking a 'heavy loss to the code here, 'but their last game in Auckland was well up to the high standard set by the service teams, and the record attendance of spectators was not slow to show its appreciation. v Other men from Home will take the places of those now leaving, but some of t!he present draft will long be remembered for their clever and skilful Soccer and their fine sportsmanship.
