BOWLING.
SATURDAY'S DOINGS. ANOTHER BRILLIANT DAY. (By TRUNDLKR.) Bowlers, were again lucky on Saturday, the greens being all the better for the heavy rain on the previous day. Consequently there was a good attendance on every green, enabling all the fixtures to proceed under most pleasant conditions. The Press and the Printers mustered ten rinks at Carlton, but the editor of the "Herald," Mr. It. M. Hacket, in responding to the welcome of the club president, Mr. A. Coutts, gave a correct forecast when he expressed his fear that the local players would prove too good. However, there was not much difference at the end, and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the afternoon. The Carlton grounds presented a beautiful sight on Saturday, with the four greens in a row, the two in the middle showing a growth of grass that promises well for the new season. The Nomads at Onehunga. The Nomads rounded off a great season on Saturday by taking 17 rinks to Onehunga, where they were warmly welcomed by the club president, Mr. R. Buchanan. Tho grounds presented a very attractive appearance, with a nice show of spring flowers in full bloom, and Mrs. Buchanan and her friends had decorated with cut flowers all the tables, which were ranged along the front of the pavilion. All three greens had to be used, to accommodatc these visitors, in addition to two rinks who were playing for the challenge matches, the pavilion green being opened for the first time for some months. Referring to the large number of visitors, Mr. Buchanan remarked that it was like the old days, when Onehunga enjoyed such a great preponderance of support during the winter. A very fine response was made-by the. Rev. W- P- Rankin (New Lynn), whose resonant voice was heard to great advantage as he stood out on the green, in full view of the whole company. Eloquent and humoro.us, he declared how he had enjoyed his. association with the Nomads, i although on that particular occasion lie was present as s. challenger for the Edwin Stars. He only regretted that it was the last gathering of the season, and probably that was why he had been asked to speak. He had noticed that they always brought in the minister at the end, not to bury them, he added amidst the laughter that followed his point, but to inspire them for a new season, and h<j looked forward to another enjoyable winter with them. A response was also made by Messrs. J. W. Hard ley and A. J. Parker. Tho organiser, Mr. J. J. Donnell, announced that possibly a few rinks would visit the Dominion Road green unofficially next Saturday, ami that there would be a social in the Epsom pavilion on Tuesday evening, October 10. He explained that Mr. E- A. Craig, president of the Auckland Bowling Club, had apologised for absence, on account of illness in the family, but the club was represented by Messrs. A. J. Parker and E. I. Lyell. The Rcmuera president, Mr. E. E, Daniels, was also unavoidably absent* on account of the late Mr. Mcßobie's funeral, but two of the vicepresidents. were there instead —Mr. E. D. Ashton and Professor A. C. Paterson. At, Mr. Donnell's request the whole company stood for a few moments in bilent respect to Mr. Meßobie's memory. The Soccer Old Boys are playing G'arlton nest Saturday. Those who have not vet given in their names are invited to notify Mr. P. M. Ritchie. The Grammar Old Boys who played Carlton last month are notified that their photograph has been enlarged and framed, and is now on exhibition in a Queen Street window. For a few days they will have an opportunity of inspecting it, after which it will be presented to the school, as a memento of the Diamond Jubilee. Mr. Carter, formerly a member of the Kelburn Club, Wellington, has come to Auckland to reside, and' has joined the Carlton Club. Ho plays an excellent game, but will bo seen in action in' a really competitive game for the first time on Labour Day. In front of him will be Whittaker, Sinclair and Bird, and if they play' as well as they did on Saturday they should get a good run. A visitor to Carlton on Saturday was Mr. R. Higgott, the well-known Whitiora (Hamilton) skip. Obituary. Death has been busy amongst the bowlers during the pAst winter, and it is with great regret that reference has, to bo mado to the late Mr. N- Mcßobie, prominent for many years as one of the most successful Remuera skips. Until failing health hindered him, he took a keen delight, in the competitive game, and for many years no tournament would, have seemed complete without him. He also took a great interest in the management of the game, and usually held office, in his club, including the presidency during the 1924-1925 season. Mr. A. Coutts correctly expressed the sentiments of the large company assembled in the Carlton pavilion on Saturday, on tho occasion of the annual match with the Press and the Printers, when he said that they all deeply regretted the loss of a former president of the Master Printers' Association. Cut off at an age when bowlers, would consider that he had not yet reached the prime of life, tho. whole community loses a man whose activities might have been expected to continue for many years. Even younger was the late Mr. James Dann, whose, death will be a real loss to Mount Albert. Originally a member of St. Helier's, where he held office as treasurer during his last year there, he moved to Mount Albert about five years ago, where ho immediately took an interest in the local club's activities. For four years he was on tho general and match committees, and was always prominent in any move for. tho betterment of tho club. A most enthusiastic bowler, it was not surprising to find him winning the club championship three years ago, but he was generous also, and no call was ever made without a liberal response from the late Jimmy Dann. He will bo greatly missed by all his clubmates. LATE MR. McROBIE. During an interval in the play at Carlton bowling green on Saturday, the president, Mr. Alf. Coutts, addressing the bowlers said that he had an unpleasant duty to perform in drawing attention to the death of one of the best-loved bowlers, Mr. Mcßobie, of the Remuera Club. The speaker paid a high tribute .to the sterling worth of their comrade, who had for spme time been a leading member of the Remuera Club. He had also been a proniinont figure at the annual gathering of the press and printers, and would undoubtr edly have been with them at the reunion had he been spared. At Mr. Coutts' request, members stood silent for a few moments out of respect to deceased.

There was a good muster ot the visitors, who came forward with no losk than ten teams. These were pitted against a similar number of the club's players, and a very excellent contest resulted. The local men proved too good for the Press and Printers, and secured six wins in the ten games played, with a margin on the aggregate of «U points. At the afternoon tea adjournment, the president, Mr. All'. Contts, expressed the pleasure it again gave the club to welcome the pressmen and their other friends for this- annual reunion. Mr. H.
