NATIONAL ECONOMICS.
It takes as much labour to produce the same article at 10/ as it does at £1, but if by protection or under the pretext that the standard cf living- is raised, you raise the cost of production to a £1 basis, then our natural resources have to produce twice as much to purchase it. We agree that the wheel ot' industry and commerce is set in motion by and receives impetus from our rural products, therefore it is beyond the pale of understanding that those responsible for government should create the need to use the value of two pounds of butterfat where one would do. It is equally astounding that some of your correspondents should advocate land settlement with the vigour and enthusiasm of youth and then demand higher protective duties, which means, "'go on the land young' man, we will borrow money to assist you, but the more you produce, we- demand the higher shall be the cost of production."
