LADIES' TOURNEY.
i PLAY AT CHRISTCHURCH. MISS KATHBONE'S WIN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Rain' and a blustering southerly wind spoiled playing conditions at Shirley for the first round of the ladies' golf championship, but nevertheless the competitors were promptly out, and the play, though naturally not the most brilliant as far as shot making was .concerned, proved close and keen in almost every game.. At one stage in the championship matches hail came down heavily and the players were putting with hailstones t?o thickly on the greens that the path of the ball was serious affected. Miss Rathbone (Auckland) beat Miss Petrie (Miramar). Miss Petrie took too long to get used to the. going, and Mise Rathbone took four out of the first five I holes. Though the load was reduced to one at the turn, Mtes Rathbone had the upper hand and won by 3 and 2. Her driving generally was stronger and more accurate than that of her opponent. She won the first two holes and the third was halved for bogey 3. The fourth and fifth went to Miss Rathbone, Miss Petrie failing to finish at the fifth after driving out of bounds. Miss Petrie played better golf at the sixth and seventh and carried off both the holes by good putting. The eighth was halved for 5. At the ninth Mies Petrie again diminished Mies Rathbone's lead. This left Miss Rathbone still one up. The tenth went to Miss Rathbone in 5, but she lost the next o—4. The twelfth went to Miss Rathbone for a four, while the thirteenth was halved in 4. The Shirley hole fell to . Miss Rathbone, again 6—7, and the "Farthest South" and "Pagoda" were halved in 4 and 8 respectively. The game ended with Mies Rathbone 3 up and 2 to play. Mies Payton (Rotorua) was steady considering the conditions, and had a decisive win over Mrs. Slee of the West Coast. One of the surprises of the morning was the win for Mies 0. Stevens over Mrs. McCarthy, the Otago veteran. Mrs. McCarthy was reckoned in the running and liable at least to get through the firet few rounds. Miss Stevens is on the nine mark, five more than Mrs. McCarthy,.but the conditions favoured the younger player. The win for Miss Stevens was a very good one. Mrs, Kingseote, of the Christchurch Club, was matched with Miss Kay, and did very well indeed to carry the match to the seventeenth green against such a formidable opponent. Miss Kay is on the 1 mark and Mm. Kingscotc's handicap is ten. Miss Kay was playing very steady golf, and the Christchurch lady's performance against a player with a reputation such as Miss Kay possesses, was very commendable. THIS MORNING'S PLAY. .
