PRESENTS TO THE POPE.
The presents offered to Pope Pius XL since the signing of the Lateran treaties are so numerous and tempting that some of them "have to be refused, and others are liable to disturb his religious equanimity. The first and most important was the magnificent throne covered with silkembroidered damask and gold, which the ladies of the Roman aristocracy have offered for the Vatican Sistine Chapel, where, by the way, for several centuries no pontifical throne worthy of its surroundings had been erected. A sort of makeshift throne was. placed near the altar on solemn occasions, with a bald' achin fastened clumsily on p piece of Avood, and threatening to fall down and cause the candles to set fire to the altar.
