EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.
CLAIMS NOT COMING IN. MAYOR'S VISIT TO WELLINGTON. "The people of the affected area are not sending in their claims as we had expected they would do," said the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, to-day in reply to inquiries concerning the recent meeting in Wellington of the central committee, which is handling the distribution of reliief funds. "We are at a loss to know why this is so," the Mayor added. "One reason advanced was that the people concerned have an aversion to disclosing their private business." The Mayor said that in order to obtain the necessary information for the guidance of committee the Prime Minister had adjourned the meeting for a fortnight. A sub-committee had also been set up to inquire into the matter, and if necessary to send someone around the affected districts for the purpose of obtaining first-hand information.
