LOUGHRAN STOPPED.
Sharkey Beats Ex-Light-Heavy Champion In Third. TECHNICAL KNOCK-OUT. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Itecelved 2 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 26. Jack Sharkey, a contender for the heavy-weight title, to-night beat Tommy Loughran, who recently relinquished the light heavy-weight title, by a technical knockout in the third round. Sharkey weighed 1961b and Loughran 1861b. In the first round they sparred in mid-ring, each trying the other out with jabs to the face. Sharkey hooked both hands to the head but Loughran uppercut him. The round was even. In the second they sparred at long range. Their blows were light and they clinched repeatedly. It was Sharkey's round. Smashing through Loughran's feeble guard, Sharkey sent his opponent to the floor. When Tommy staggered to his feet he did not know where he was, and reeled along the ropes into a neutral corner. Sharkey was ready to deliver a finishing punch, but it was riot necessary, the referee stepping between them and declaring Sharkey the winner. Loughran was carried into his corner, and wa6 then ready to continue, but the fight was over. In the words of one competent observer, "it was one of those fights where boxing skill of one of the contenders, Loughran, counted for nothing against the sudden aggressiveness and the superior power of his opponent." The final knockout blow was delivered 27 seconds after the beginning of the third round, and came unexpectedly. The men's wariness throughout the opening rounds of the contest, and their tendency to box at a distance, had promised a drawn-out contest.
The sharp and decisive manner in which Sharkey disposed of his opponent demonstrated that LougUiran has no place among the heavy-weights to-day.
