GERALDINE MEETING.

OPEN SPRINT TO SILVER COOT TEREMOA AND ROYAL SILK SCORE IN TROTS. ONLY THREE FAVOURITES PAY DIVIDENDS. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") TIMARU, Thursday. With cold and threatening conditions riding most of the day the Geraldine Racing Club was fortunate that the weather remained fine until just before the last race, when rain commenced to fall. There seems a prospect that the weather will be unpleasant for the second day's racing. The attendance was large and the totalisator handled £10.275, compared with £10,116 on the opening day last year. An inquiry was held into alleged interference to Wingatui in the cup race, but no action was taken. The presence of a number of New Zealand Cup candidates added interest to the racing on the opening day at Orari. Three of them filled the places in the Geraldine Cup, while Rapier registered a creditable perfoimance among the sprinters. ■ Pangolin was making his first public appearance as a jumper when he won the hurdles. He had done a fair amount of schooling at Riccarton, where he had jumped well. In the race, however, he seemed to lack confidence at the obstacles, as 113 lost ground at most of them. There was not much room for fault-finding in his efforts over the last couple of jumps, and with more racing experience he should develop improved form. He has plenty of speed, but when racing 011 the fiat he was not always a generous galloper. This weakness may be cured by further hurdling efforts, and in the meantime his prospects In that department look bright.

Antrim Boy ran a creditable race in the hurdles. He is a comparative novice as a jumper, and ho should win stakes later 011.

Beauty Light was a great disappointment in the hurdles. His easy win at the Otago Hunt meeting made him look a good prospect, but his jumping was bad, while he put no dash into his galloping. Will Win Again. Inevitable, the winner of the Oliapi Hack, is a three-year-old by Thumham from Comment, by Provocation from Wailethe. This was Inevitable's lirst success, but it will not be the last, as she is a smart galloper, liable to stay on fairly well later in the season. Captivate showed plenty of speed in the Oliapi Hack, but his finishing elTort was weak. The Grandcourt gelding had a reputation as a two-year-old, bat lie looks as if he is not solid. He should never have been beaten for second place. The King Mark four-year-old Tano was fairly well placed all through the Oliapi Hack, but he was giving away a good start in the straight. He finished with a great rattle, and a longer journey than five furlongs should suit him for his next race. Bellbird disappointed a number of admirers in the Oliapi Hack. She did not begin well, and after being bustled to secure a position she laded out when the straight was reached. With better luck at the start she would have gone a bit further, but her performance was not up to what she showed at Ashburton. In the meantime she may not stay, but I she must be given another chance, as it is certain, her latest form was not right. Prickles enhanced her reputation by her win in the Geraldine Cup. It was a very attractive effort, as she was in a handy position all the way, and she stayed on in fine style, suggestive of further successes over a distance. Ballinger Bracket in Form. The Trentham bracket, Black Mint and Royal Game (owned by Mr. W. H. Ballinger) came in for strong support in the Geraldine Cup. The former was slow to get going, and after making a move along the back lie faded out again in the straight, lloyal Game, on the other hand, was responsible for a sound pace all the way, and though Prickles wore him down he beat all the others. Ho should win a stake soon, while Black Mint requires only average luck to earn some money before he returns home.

Money Mine was responsible for a good performance when lie filled third place in the Geraldine Cup. He was staying on very strongly, and he is going to run good races over a distance this season. He is not yet at his best, but each race should benefit him. Malmsey ran a fine race in the Geraldine Cup. As usual, she began slowly, and she got into a good deal of trouble on the journey. In the circumstances she did remarkably well to finish fourth, and she was travelling faster than anything else in the field over the final furlong. Evening' was going well half a mile from home in the Geraldine Cup, but she was in trouble when the straight was reached. She looks as if she could bo improved, so she should do better shortly. Wingatui need not be condemned for her failure in the Geraldine Cup. There was an inquiry regarding interference she was said to have suffered, but no action was taken. The Tractor mare will do a lot better before the season is much further advanced. Silver Coot showed a welcome return to form in winning tlie Squatters' Handicap. He is a speedy customer, but not always reliable. His success came as a surprise, as he was thought to be too backward to show winning form yet. N.Z. Cup Victor as Sprinter. Rapier was running in flne style at the business end of the Squatters' Handicap, in which he finished fourth. When he has had another race or two he will be ready to show good form over at least a mile and a-quarter, while he should be a very fit Cup candidate in November .

The three-year-old Stealth, a good winner at the Otago Hunt meeting, raced disappointingly in the Squatters' Handicap, and he will need to do much better to be a live candidate for the Dunedin Guineas.

Caterpillar, the favourite for tho Squatters' Handicap, was never dangerous. She jumped iut slowly and at no stage did she look like being in the picture. This was not her real form.

Money Order—badly placed at the barrier —failed to make a good beginning in the Squatters' Handicap. Once on the way he .showed a great burst of speed, but he retired a furlong from the post. It was his first race since he was operated on for wind troubles, and it is too early yet to say how he is going to shape, over six furlongs in a good field.

Aspiring gave a moderate display, in the Squatters' Handicap. This three-year-old filly does not look nearly at her - best yet, but in any case it is unlikely that she will reach the form of her brilliant half-brother, Silver Paper. : Glenrowan won the Raukapuka Handicap in attractive style. He was well placed all the way, and he stayed en well. Earlier in his career he was looked 011 as a useful hack sprinter, but now there seems a prospect that he will run out at least a good mile. Mount Boa showed great speed in the Raukapuka Handicap. He soon opened out a gap from the field, but after being four lengths in front at the entrance to the straight Glenrowan ran him down in the run home. Meantime, though lacking stamina, Mount Boa looks like a good hack up to six furlongs. Sailing Home Soon. Sailing Home, a three-year-old brother to Set Sail, failed to begin smartly in the Raukapuka Handicap, but he was travelling very fast over the final furlong. A win may be expected at any time, and with more racing experience he should make a good horse, with prospects of staying. Amourette had every chance in the Raukapuka Handicap, as she was well placed from the start, but she failed badly over the final stages. Narrative and Mem bo had an interesting struggle in the Belfie/d Handicap. They were together in the lead for six furlongs, and Narrative won by a head. She is a useful sort by Solferino from Parable, so that she is bred to stay. Membo also possesses stamina, and his winning turn will come soon.

On the form he showed at the Grand National meeting Honeycomb looked like •being dangerous in the Belfield Handicap. As usual, he jumped out slowly, and his lightweight rider seemed unable to get him going. The result was that he was a long way back at the entrance to the straight, and though he finished with a strong run he never looked like a winner. He requires a strong horseman to get the best out of him.

Chickwlieat showed a glimpse of his old form in the Belfield Handicap. He was running on at the end, and he will pay his way later in the season.

Nincompoop gave the customary trouble at the start of the Belfield Handicap. He sidled across the track, pushing the other horses out of his way, while by way of variety lie resolutely refused to face the barrier: Eventually the field was dispatched with Nincompoop two lengths in the rear. He soon moved up, but he retired when the straight was reached. He shows some aptitude as a hurdler, so he may have a chance to distinguish himself soon in that- department.
