OTAHUHU COUNCIL.

The Otahuhu Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. T. Clements, presiding.

Returned Soldiers.—A deputation of Otahuhu returned soldiers waited on the council with a view of finding employment for several ex-service men. They offered £25 on £200 worth of work, towards which the Government will find £100, and the council the remaining £73. Work will be commenced shortly, and will be shared by returned soldiers.

Plunket Society.—The council granted £5 5/ towards the local branch of the Plunket Society.

Refuse Collection.—The district traffic manager requested the council to collect refuse from 33 tenants out of the 54 resident in the railway block, who were prepared to meet the cost in extra rent. The council agreed.

ISlectric Lights.—ln reply to a request for more electric lights, the Power Board stated that stocks of fittings had been exhausted, and further supplies would not arrive for at least another six weeks.

Revaluation.—Councillor Hunter movtid that the Valuer-General be asked to revalue the borough, on the grounds that the business areas were under valued, while the residential sections were taxed too heavily. Councillors Petrie and Pearee strongly objected to the motion. It wp decided to refer the matter to the legal and finance committee for a report.

Hospital Affairs.—The Rev, Wood, Hauraki representative on the Hospital Board, explained the purposes of the proposed new infectious hospital. He was convinced that the board were acting on medical opinion, and said he considered the work necessary.

Street CollesiJong.—With a view to strengthening the hands of the Mayor at a conference to be held at Onehunga on Monday night in regard to street collections, it was considered that were ample per year, and it was resolved to give preference to the appeal on behalf of the St. John Ambulance, Poppy Day, protection of women and children, and hospitals.

Tamaki Bridge.—The Public Works Department advised that a new bridge across the Tamaki River on the Great South Road, with two twenty-three feet spans and one forty foot span, with twenty feet carriage way, and two four t'eet footpaths would cost £9377. An alternative proposal involving less expenditure was also submitted. The council would be asked to find about £1500 on the ■ first schemed
