BRITISH SOLDIER DEAD.
EX-GOVERNOR OF QUEENSLAND
(Australian Press Assn.—United Service.) (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, September 25. The death is announced of LieutenantGeneral Sir Herbert Charles Chermside, ex-Governor of Queensland, at the age of 79.
Sir Herbert Charles Chermside was born near Salisbury in 1850, and received his education at Eton. . He entered the army at the age of 18, rising rapidly in rank till in 1898 he was a Major-General. He served in the Turko-Russian War, and saw action with the Egyptian Army. He was later appointed Governor-General of the Red Sea Littoral. For a time he served in the East, returning to take part in the South African War. He was appointed Governor of Queensland in 1901, and held that position till 1905, retiring from service two years later.
