DISCOVERY OF OIL. I . QUESTION - OF DECLARED DISTRICTS (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. In the Taumarunui "-Press" of September. 20 there is an article dealing with the alleged discovery of oil, in which it is stated: "The original prospector has induced the. Mines Department to declare his concessions a mining area so that operations can proceed. All necessary information has been supplied to the Department, and the necessary proclama-tion-will be gazetted at an early date." When the attention of the Minister of Mines, Mr. Veitch, was drawn to the article, he stated that some of the statements were not in accordance with fact. He pointed out that the Department had not Been induced to declare the area over whiclisthe original prospector claimed to hold,i.concessions to an oil distriqt. Before the matter could be dealt Avith it would be necessary to obtain some further, information which was not at present in possession of the Department; and; even when these particulars? were received, it would be a question for the Government to decide whether the circumstances were such as to justify; the issue "of . . the. necessary Order-in'-CouncSl - ? proclaiming the area to be an oil district. .
