OBITUARY.

MRS. MARY B. BIRCH,

A resident of Auckland for 35 years, Mrs. Mary Bower Birch, has died, aged 78. She was the eldest daughter of Dr. Youlin, of New Jersey, and married the late Mr. John Bagot Birch, who, at that time, was manager in New York for the firm of Rathbone Brothers, of Liverpool. Subsequently Mr. and Mrs. Birch lived in Calcutta. In 1894 they came to New Zealand, and Mr. Birch was for a long time connected with the Island fruit trade. Mrs. Birch was well known in musical circles in this city in her earlier days, and at one time gave concerts here. She enjoyed good health until about seven months ago, when she injured a leg in an accident. This ultimately caused her death. She is survived by one son, Mr. John Youlin Birch, and a married daughter who lives in Sydney. There are nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
