ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. SCOTT. —Waiatarua is by Hitchki^ from Folly by Captivatov from The Jilt by Traducer. Having Iris first race this season, Crimestor jnst failed to see out the seven furlongs attached to the Maiden Plate at Avondale. However, his showing was decidedly promising and when he becomes thoroughly seasoned he should be capable of paying his way in hack company. Yaluo met with a good deal of trouble on tho first day of the Avondale meeting, but on Monday Ellis hopped her out quickly in the Nihotapu Handicap, and she led all the way, winning very comfortably. Value will again be hard to beat the next time out. False Scent is a most promising three-year-okl, and he can be counted upon to bo very hard to beat in future events this season. At Wanganui he finished third in the Guineas, and the Avondale Guineas beat all but Eaglet. He is capable of further improvement. High Finance was given her first race this season in the President's Handicap at Avondale on Monday. She jumped awav smartly and led the field to the turn", where she retired. This filly has a lot of speed, and she will be much harder to beat the next time out. It will not take long to see her at her best. • " Sea Cob wuii at the Pakuvanga Hunt Club meeting, and on that showing wa,s well supported for the Swanson Handicap on the first day of the Avondale meeting. He was well beaten by Prince Val, but did his work rightly on Monday, when he accounted for the New Lynn Handicap, though he had little to spare from A.rikitoa at the finish. Sight Draft, a youngster who was sent° up by Mr. Lan Duncitn to J. T. Jamieson to train, was given her first race in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale on Monday. She is a nice-looking youngster, and was in the limelight till the straight was reached, where she faded out. It was not a bad effort, and she will do better later on. She is a full-sister to Noteworthy. Imperial Prince, who was a promising two-vear-old last season, ran a good race in the Avondale Guineas, and he should be hard to beat in future engagements. He was one of the leaders till well into the straight, and finished third, and it was a very fine effort considering this was his first appearance as a three-year-old. Prince Val registered two good performances at Avondale, making an exhibition of the field in the Swanson Handicap oil the opening day. In his second start he scored very impressively in the Mount Albert Handicap, for he was badly , placed early in the race and also got anything but a good passage. He finished on very gamely at the right end of the race and is one of the most promising hacks seen out for some time. Hard- Words, the two-year-old by Diacquenod from Mazabuka, showed a lot of speed in the Two-year-old Parade at Wanganui, for after getting awav badlv, ho finished almost on terms with Chief Link, who, although in Auckland, was not a starter at the Avondale meeting. Hard Words ran well in the Avondale Stakes for half a mile, and when a little more seasoned should win a good t ,vo-year-old race. There is no doubt about his pace, and at present he only lacks experience. He is worth keeping ill mind. Lineage failed to show up in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, but she won tho Avondale Stakes by a narrow margin on Saturday. She was always well in the picturc, and did her work right at the finish. Lineage (Liniond-— Merit) is bred the right way to win races, for Liniond is the sire of stayers, and Merit was a very fast mare in her day. Merit was bred in England and was imported to New Zealand by Mr. V. Eiddiford, who bred the winner of the Avondale Stakes, and races her. Lineage could have * been bought very cheaply before her classic success on Saturday. >. Waltzer fell at the first obstacle in the Ivingsland Hurdle Race at Avondale on Saturday, but on Monday he soon opened up a big break on the field in the Grey Lynn Hurdle Race, and it was only at the top that Zircon caught him. Waltzer was very tired when the straight was reached, and he fell at tho last fence. In a shorter distance event in the near future he should get on the winning list. At the Wellington winter meeting he ran a good race in the Corunna Hurdlei Race, when he finished second to Horomea. White Fang ran fourth- in the Flying Handicap at Avondale on Saturday, but with several good horses left at the peg, it was thought that this position was not due to his merits, seeing that his efforts had mostly been confined to distance-racing last season. However, he showed on Monday that the idea was fallacious, for he won the President's Handicap with a great burst of speed. He was not sighted in the early stages, but half-way down the straight came with a great run, and simply galloped over everything, winning in very easy fashion. White Fang is worth keeping in mind for any event he contests 111 the future. Last season he showed ability up to a mile and a-lialf, and he is at'his best now.

Piuthair is about at her best now. A couple of seasons ago she would have had to give weight to the majority she met at Avondale, but since being taken to Sydney went off. Her first glimpse of lier true form was given at the Wanganui meeting, when she was narrowly defeated in the Higgie Handicap. In the Avondale Cup she ran a good race till well into the straight, and on Monday won well. This mare is going to be very hard to beat in other engagements she has in. Auckland before she returns home. It is worthy of note that when Star Stranger made, an Australasian record for a mile and three furlongs at Trentham in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap in 1927, he only beat Piuthair by half a head. Star Stranger had 9.5 and Piuthair 7.8. Piuthair won the Egmont, Taranaki, and Wanganui Cups on end subsequently.

L. Dulieu has been engaged to ride Princess Elizabeth in the Tomoana Hurdles at the Hawke's Bay meeting, which takes place next Saturday. Watch officer was prominent during the early running of the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, and on Saturday he was a starter in the Avondale Stakes. He ran well, finishing third, and is likely to get on the winning list before long. Ruling King was galloping as well as anything at Ellerslie prior to the Avondale meeting, but a week or two previously developed a cold, which probably left its effects. He was a starter in the Avondale Stakes, but failed to show up, but he should do better later on. After jumping a couple of hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning Adjuster was tried over the steeplechase fences on the flat, but did not shape very encouragingly. After clearing the stonewall and first fence of the double he baulked at the next fence several times and was not further persevered with. He will require plenty of schooling before becoming a proficient jumper over the big fences. Sir Archie was finishing on just behind the placed horses in the Kingsland Hurdle race on the first day at Avondale, and considering it was his first appearance as a jumper his effort was very satisfactory. Sir Archie lost ground at several of the fences, but when he gains confidence and improves in his jumping he should turn out a good hurdle proposition. Royal Ruler, one of W. Stone's team at Te Awamutu, failed to show up in the- Avondale Stakes, but he won the Nursery Handicap on the second day of the Avondale meeting in good style. This youngster had been galloping well at Te Awamutu prior to the meeting, and was better suited by the smaller field on the second day, and was prominent all the way. He is capable of still further improvement. Biddy's Boy came to Auckland with a good reputation, his track work at Te Awamutu being responsible for his solid backing on both days at Avondale. He failed to show up in the Avondale Stakes, but ran an improved race in the Nursery Handicap on the second day, when he finished fifth. Biddy's Boy will be improved by his racing at Avondale, and it should not be long before he shows to more advantage. His dam, Lady Biddy, had a lot of speed when raced, and won her only race as a six-year-old, while in the following season she accounted for two events, and was placed on three other occasions out of seven starts. Star Stranger has had a bit of racing this season, and that he is approaching his best was demonstrated by the great finish he put in in the Plumpton Handicap at Avondale on Monday. He was going great guns at the finish, and if it had been a mile and a-half he would have won. A couple of seasons ago hn was just beaten in the Foley Memorial Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, at Avondale, by Branson, and carried on that occasion 10.1. Star Stranger is going to be in demand for the Mitchelson Cup if started. In that race last season -ho was one of those who were unfortunately left at th'e post, and took no part in the race, while on the second day Goshawk won the King Edward Handicap by a head from Star Stranger and Catkin, who dead-heated for second place. Star Stranger had 9.12 | on his back then. With 0.11 in the Mitchelson Cup this season he will have many admirers.

The local two-year-old Lady Court I went a fair race in the Nursery Handicap and she is likely to do better as the season advances. 'This filly has plenty of pace, but is a bit on the small side; still she should be capable of paying her way. Prodice went a solid race in the Avondale Cup and she is likely to be an improved mare the next time she appears in public. She is engaged in the Mitchelson Cup, to be run at Ellerslie next month, and if she trains on satisfactorily in the meantime she should put up a creditable showing in that event. Clopton made his first appearance as a three-year-old at- the Avondale meeting on Saturday. He was in the picture all the way, and finished third. Clopton is one of J. T. Jamieson's team at Takanini, and he should do better before the season is much further advanced. Although defeated for first money in the Avondale Stakes, Imamint put up a most impressive performance, and better placed earlier in the contest she would have won. The Te Rapa-trained filly displayed ft great burst of speed over the final stages of the race and she promises to develop into a two-year-old a cut above the ordinary. Calithe, who is engaged in steeplechase events at the Auckland spring meeting, was given a turn over the big fences on the flat at Elle.rslie yesterday morning. Ridden by H. Dulieu, the chestnut gelding gave a very promising display and he° should perform creditably in this department of the game. Calithe has done a fair amount of racing and his condition will be a big asset to him when required to take on cross-country events. K. Robinson, the Southern apprentice, who usually rides Lady's Boy in his engagements, and was successful on that gelding when he won the Members'* Handicap on the first day of the Avondale meeting, will remain at Ellerslie until after the Auckland spring meeting is concluded. He can go to scale at round about 7.9, and his services are likely to be in demand for the approaching meeting at Ellerslie. Transformer ran a good race in the Plumpton Handicap on the second clay of the Avondale meeting. He was always one of the leaders, and halfway down the straight was in front, but failed to withstand the challenges of Piuthair, and later Star Stranger, being beaten into third place at the finish. Transformer looks as though he is coming back to hia best, and on his showing on Monday he is going to be hard to beat over, a mile and a-quarter, or a little more, in the near future. Standfast was unlucky to l>e beaten on the first day of the Avondale meeting, and if he had got a good run he would have been much harder to beat than he was. He was a starter in the Plumpton Handicap, one mile and aquarter, on the second day, and after being in the picture till the straight, failed to go on with it. He did not get too good a run in this race either, for when going through along the back, ho seemed to meet with trouble, and also as the field was crossing the top. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. Owners and trainers arc reminded j that acceptances for the Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting and final payments for the Welcome Stakee and Great Northern Guineas close with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, at 5 p.m. next Friday. I
