MISHAP TO MISSION VESSEL.
FEAT BY CHIEF OFFICEE
An award of £200 to the officers and crew of the mission steamer Southern Cross has been made by Lloyds as a sequel to the mishap to the vessel some time ago off Norfolk Island, when under very trying circumstances a jury rudder w;rs rigged to bring the vessel hack to Auckland. Out of the £200 an amount of £75 is to go to the chief officer of. tiu*. vessel, Mr. J. W. Jones, who dived over-board-and fastened cables to the rudder. After the mishap a claim for £1547 was made to Lloyds by tin mis.iou authorities, with a strong recommeiuKtion that recognition should be made of the work done by Mr. Jones. Cabled advice has been received in Auckland that the underwriters have awarded- £1500 in settlement of the claim. .In expressing the greatest satisfaction at the.settlement and the £200 award in addition, the mission authorities express appreciation of the assistance rendered by Mr. R. Smith, Lloyds' surveyor at Auckland.
