NEW REEF LOCATED. TWO MILES FROM WAIIIL (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)' WAIHI, this day. _ Mr. McXnughton and a party of prospectors have located' a reef deposit at the head of the Mataura stream, about two miles north of Waihi. "Two adit levels have been put in, and sinking operations 011 the load are now in progress. The walls of the lode have not yet been proved, but the reef formation is tlio full width of the shaft. So far the assays taken range from 0/ to 01/'o per ton, silver predominating. The prospects are distinctly promising, and it is considered they warrant every investigation in the direction of sinking and opening up op the lode. It is recognised by district mining men that large tracts of likely country in and around Waihi have never been seriously prospected, and that they hold favourable prospects. At the last sitting of the Warden's Court Mr. McNaughton was granted a prospecting licensu covering 50 acres. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Occidental Una. —lioport for period ending September 21 : During the week we completed No. 2 slope up to oiul of ground in a south-easterly direction, and also made a commencement with No. 3 stopc in the same direction. The reef system will average about sft in thickness of quartz veins, and a mixture of country rock. The quartz looks kindly, being highly mineralised, and during the week a few colours of gold were to lie seen. No. 4 stopo southeast of shaft: This stopc has been commenced. and the stockwork will average about Oft of quartz stringers and country rock, which is all shot down and sorted out for battery treatment, and during the week coarse dabs of gold were seen in various veins. Crushing is proceeding at battery. Waiomo Sulphide.—During the fortnight ended September 21 the new air-compress-ing plant was brought into operation with satisfactory results. Sufficient air is now available "to operate at least four rockdrills. The north drive oil the main reef at No. I! level has been resumed and extended 2Gft. making a total of 3 77ft. A contract has been let to drive 300 ft on this face. It is an interesting work, because as the crest of the mountain is approached this level will have 700 ft overhead. A contract has been let for driving on the Birthday, or No. 2 reef, at No. 3 level. This reef exists about 150 ft eastward of the main reef. In the intermediate level, 45ft above No. 3 level, high gnide ore is being opened up ready for breaking and transport to the mill. The construction of the aerial tramway, to connect mine and mill, is in hand. At the null excellent progress has been made with the construction work. The installation of the oil notation plant is now being undertaken. Ohinemurl.—Report for fortnightly period ending the' 21st instant North , section i No. *1 level. TUo drivo on the Cnmoola southward has been extended 46ft, making 352 ft from No. 1 winze, or 700 ft from the main crosscut. 1 his lace is not payable. In another 70ft it will reach a point corresponding with the northern end of a cliute at No. 3 level. In the main crosscut a lode has been exposed which carries high grade ore for a width of 3ft north and south of the crosscut. Arrangements are being made to dri\e upon this ore. In the Silverstream section at this level the drive, on the Silver Queen reef lias been extended 15ft in good ore. This development will be accelerated now that better ventilation is available from the completion of the rise to No. 3 lcjei. This rise was in high grade height The crosscut to intersect the Julia reef, which is out 95ft. will reach its objective in a further Soft of driving. At No 3 level in the south section the dm« on the Camoola reef has been projected ""ft making 378 ft south of the main rise, or 2115 ft south of the main crosscut at this level.
