At 4.20 this morning a well-known landmark, Devonshire Boardinghouse, a two-storeyed building of seventeen rooms, was totally destroyed by fire. The building was owned by Mr. A. E. Jull, of Waipawa,. and leased by Mrs. A. B. Meinung. Seven boarders escaped in night attire, all being heavy losers. The fire appears to have started in the kitchen, but the cause is unknown. The building, 24 years old, was formerly known as the Tavistock Hotel. The furniture and effects were insured for £270. The insurance on the building is unknown. Fireman Arthur Green had one hand cut by falling iron, several stitches being necessary. One boarder was badly singed, and all had a narrow escape from serious injury or worse.
