ASHBURTON MEETING.
CHIDE'S HANDICAP. SECOND LEG TO PINK COAT. JACKY LOGAN AND WRACKLER. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. The spring racing campaign in the South Island was opened to-day, when the- Ashburton County Racing Club held ite meeting. The weather was perfect, a sharp frost being followed by bright sunshine, while the rain which fell earlier in the week ieft the race track in great order. There was a large attendance, and the investments showed a substantial increase, the total being £11,431, compared with £9710 last year. The racing was full of interest, and there were a few good performances. vSince last season the club has gone in for a scheme of improvements, costing over £1000. Ono important change is that horses do not have to come through the crowd, but reach the birdcage along an enclosed track by the rails in front of the grandstand. The old judge's box has been scrapped, and the judge has been provided with excellent quarters on top of the stewards' etand, from which, in addition to getting a good line on the finishes along a wire, he also has a great view of the horses as they race up the straight.
