HISTORIC'S CUP.
STABLEMATE LINEAGE TAKES STAKES. OPEN SPRINT TO EAGLET. LADY'y , BOY SCORES IN MEMBERS" FLYING HANDICAP SPOILT BY BAD START. Only for a cold easterly wind the weather would have been ideal on Saturday for the opening of the Avonclalo Jockey Club's spring meeting. There was a large attendance, and the racing was interesting throughout, the big double being won by the favourite com- ; bination, Historic and Eaglet. The course was in excellent order, and sonic good times were registered. The Flying Handicap was spoilt 'through four of the horses being left at the post and 'two others getting badly away. This,' the starter, Mr. 0. O'Connor, explained, was due to the horses turning just as the barrier was released. During the day the sum of £40,797 was put through the machine, compared, with £20,919 for the corresponding day last year (which was held in very bad weather), an increase of £19,575. .
Favourite Lfnds the Cup. The pool was a solid one for the Avondalo Cup, and when betting ceased Historic £1613) carried most money, with Faddon ( £1385) next in demand, while Prince Humphrey ( £730) and Prodice ( £632) also . got good support. Barometer was withdrawn just prior to the start of the race owing to lameness. Aβ the field came past the stand King Emerald had charge from Piuthair, Historic, Taneriri, Singleton, High Pitch, Hyde Park and Queen Arch, with Star Stranger last. King Emerald, Piuthair and Taneriri were the leaders along the back, with High Pitch and Historic together next, followed by Hyde Park, True Blood, Prodice and Paddon. Cro6sing the top there was nothing between King Emerald, Piuthair, Taneriri and True Blood, after whom came Hyde Park, Historic, High Pitch, Paddon arid Queen Arch. As they turned for home King Emerald was just ahead of High Pitch, who was attended by Piuthair, Historic, Taneriri, and Hyde Park. Once in line for the winning post Prodice- and Historic challenged the leaders, and the last-named finishing on best got the verdict by three-quarters of a length from Prodice, with Hyde Park third, two lengths away. Prince Humphrey was fourth, then came Paddon, The Lover, High Pitch, Piuthair, Taneriri, and King Emerald. '
The Juveniles. A big field of two-year-olds went out to contest the Avondale Stakes. Hard Words (£918) was the popular fancy, while Biddy's Boy ( £61S) and Royal Huler ( £568) also had friends. When they were let go Hard Words was first out, from Lineage, War Officer, Orapai and Appeal. Turning into the straight, War Officer ran up second to Hard Words, with Lineage and Appeal next. Lineage was going nicely at thie stage and had taken charge a little further on, when Imamint put in a late run, but failed to get up by a neck. Watch Officer was third, followed by Orapai, Hard Words, Ruling King, Grand Spirit, Cylinder, Biddy's Boy and Valmarie. The Big Sprint.
There were no scratchings in tlie Flying Stakes, in which 17 horses lined up* at the Barrier. Betting was brisk, and when the final figures were adjusted most money (£1392) was invested on Eaglet, next in order being Gold Money, (£973) and Silvermine (£900). From a «trr>"ling -start Awarere, Gold money, Kiugfleld and Air King were left at the .post, while Flying Juliet and Archeen uot badly away, and these two tailed the field. Crossing the top, Lady Quex had charge from Te Atiawa, Silvermine, Eaglet, Macroom and Ruffles, and there was practically no change as 'the field entered the straight. Lady Quex and Silvermine were fighting out the finish just below the distance, when Eaglet put in a strong run and got up to win by half a length from Lady Quex, who defeated Silvermine by a short head. White Fang was fourth, next in order being Te Atiawa, Knightlike, Rufllee, TheTScgum, Lucky Rose and Benzora. An inquiry was held concerning the indifferent start in the Flying Stakes, in which several of the contestants, were badly left. The starter, Mr. C. O'Connor, stated that the horses turned around just as he released the barrier, iiml Ins explanation was accepted. Easy Win in Swancon. Leitrim, Mountain Guide nnd Merry Mason failed to parade ill the Swansou Handicap, leaving 15 runners t» {•'» to the post. Several horses wcio strongly supported, and when the math,'no closed Boa Cob ( £1957), Motere ( £1373), and Takarunga ( £503) carried most money, while Prince Val, the winner, had £407 opposite his number. Bahepoto and Salamander were slow away, and Good, Boy's colours were first to show up,from Te Kawana, Crown Arch, Prince Val and Takarv.nga. Crown Arch had charge crossing the top. with Prince Val and Te Kawana handy, followed by Sea Cob, Takarunga, and Brampton. There was little alteration, in the running aa the liclil turned for home, but Prince Val put in his claim at this stage, and he went on to win by half a dozen lengths from Sea Cob, who accounted for Sonic Lady by four lengths. Motere was fourth, followed by Brampton, Crown Arch, Takarunga, Carmint and Indolent!

The tiirce'-yoar-old Night Lad was one of the pacemakers in the Ashlnvrton Handicap, but lie collapsed \vhcn_ the straight was readied. It was a disappointing performance, not worthy of a young horse who is valued so highly as this one, but it is hard to credit that it represented liir host. Whether he I will t»uiy is open to doubt, but he run lie expected to show greatly improved form very soon, though possibly it will bo over a shorter journey. Tie wns ;i pood winner as a two-year-old, and he can be relied on to earn a lot more money this season.
