BACKERS FARE BETTER.
SOME EARLIER FAVOURITES PAY DIVIDENDS. All started in the Grey Lynn Hurdle Race, in which Zircon was made favourite, being entrusted with £700. Red Comet (£550), and Kauri Park (£510) also bad good support. Red Comet led over the first hurdle from Waltzer, Bahepoto, Gold Rep, Zircon, Birkenella, Karamu and Kauri Park, with Glenotus last. The hurdle at the straight entrance saw Red Comet, Glena Bay and Birkenella come to grief, and passing the stand Waltzer was about a dozen lengths clear of Rahepeto, with Karaehamcha, Zircon, Karamu and Gold Rep followin?. Waltzer still held his advantage along the back, but Zircon began to close on him crossing the top, and Waltzer falling at the next fence, Zircon went on and won comfortably by four lengths from R&hopoto, who beat Glenotus by three-quarters of a length. Karamu was fourth, then came Gold Rep, Kauri Park and Kamehameha, whose rider had lost an iron. The Nursery. Ruling King was not saddled up for the Nursery Handicap and the public elected Biddy's Boy favourite with £713 invested on'him, next in request being Orapai (£579) and Royal Ruler (£534). Orapai began best with Betterment, Lady Court, Foot Rule, Sight Draft and Royal Ruler in that order. Entering the etriight Betterment was in front, attended by Orapai, Foot Rule, Lady Court and Royal Ruler. The last named then came through,, and, finishing on in good style, got the verdict by threequarters of a length from Orapai, with lady Court two lengths further back. Biddy's Boy was fourth, followed by Betterment, Sight Draft, Foot Rule and Running Over. A Big Field. Crown Arch was the only defection in tie Mount Albert Handicap, in which twenty-nine horses went to the post. Several of them came in for good support, but when the machine closed Refresher ( £1058) was a solid favourite, with Prince Val ( £513) and the bracket Taurua-Tukunoa ( £393) also in demand. Norval Tea began quickest and was showing the way to Roman Pearl, Tetraehato and Currajong as they raced along the back. Pellette ran up second to Norval Tea crossing the top, with Tetrachate, Refresher, Currajong, Arihana, Prince Val and Mauriaena all handy. Prince Val moved up into fourth position as the field entered the straight, and, getting a run on the fence, he cut down the leader and scored by a long head from Refresher, who beat Bombarder by three-quarters of a length. Myola was fourth, then came Mauriaena, Norval Tea, Wild Country, Vali, Currajong and Some Lady. The Plumpton. True Blood was the only withdrawal from the Plunipton Handicap, in which the betting was fairly brisk, rooet support being accorded Hyde Park, who carried (£1616), Piuthair (£773) and Desert Glow (£761) also got a fair measure of support. When the field had settled down Piuthair had charge, attended by Star Stranger, Hyde Park, The Loi jr, Standfast and Glenstar, and racing along the back the order was Glenstar, Piuthair, Hyde Park, The Lover, Star Stranger, Stand', fast, High Pitch, Desert Glow and Singleton. Crossing the top Glenetar was showing the way to Transformer, Standfast and Piuthair, with The Lover, Hyde Park and Star Stranger next. Glenstar turned for home first from Transformer, High Pitch, and Standfast, but he tired over the final stages and Piuthair and Star Stranger then canie on the scene, and in a good finish Piuthair defeated Star Stranger by half a > length, with Transformer a similar distance away in third place. High Pitch was next, then came The Lover, Dsresfc Glow, Singleton, Hyde Park, Standfast and Glenstar.
