UNEMPLOYED EX-SOLDIERS.
WORK ON RECREATION RESERVE. A GOOD BEGINNING. Mr. R. G. Speight, chairman of the Reserves Committee, reported to the Onehunga Borough Council last night that he had waited upon the Patriotic Association with a view to getting a further grant towards laying out the Recreation Reserve, and had been successful, a second sum of £500 having been verbally promised. Thirty returned soldiers had started work on the reserve. He suggested, and it was agreed, that application be made to the various sports bodies for donations towards the work, pointing out that the council had not received the full amount promised and would be unable to carry out the original programme unless further assistance was received. The Public Works Department will grant a subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £2037 for the relief of unemployed returned soldiers on the Onehunga recreation reserve. The Mayor (Mr. W. C. Coldicutt) said the council was pleased to receive this promise of a Government subsidy. He hoped that the various sports bodies would come up to the mark with substantial donations and that the Government would grant a £1 for £1 subsidy on their contributions. A letter was read subsequently from the Patriotic Association confirming the verbal promise to make their total donation £100 Q.
