RAGING ATLANTIC

TERRIFIC GALES.

U.S. Liner Receives Two S.O.S. Calls. EXTREMELY HEAVY WEATHER. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 12 noon.) RUGBY, October 8. Liners arriving at Plymouth yesterday report that they encountered the full force of the terrific gales which during the past week have prevailed over a wide area in midAtlantic. Several passengers and members of the crew of the Caronia received injuries during the buffetings of the seas which reached the top deck. The United States liner, America, had a list of 25 degrees at one stage and a number of passengers received medical attention during the storm. The America responded to a call for help from the Dutch steamer Calaeno, but while proceeding to her assistance was called to aid the Swedish steamer Canvallaria. The Canvallaria later reported that she was able to proceed under her own steam and the America resumed her journey. Other vessels arriving yesterday which came through exceptionally heavy weather were the Scania, Belgenland and the American Banker.
